CFL Do's and Don'ts

CFL DO's

  • Do use CFLs in a location where they will be on for at least 15 minutes.
  • Do use CFL's specifically designed for use in ceiling fans which are made to withstand the high vibrations caused by the fan. This will prolong the bulb's life.
  • Do use dimming CFLs with a dimmer switch.
  • Do use CFLs specifically designed to withstand heat in recessed cans.
  • Do use only CFLs with a UL rating that are specifically designed to withstand wetness during outdoor usage.
  • Do use CFLs timers such as mechanical timers (e.g. the inexpensive dial type timers).
  • Do properly recycle CFLs to ensure that no mercury gets into the environment and to help reduce energy consumption.

CFL DONT's

  • Don't use a CFL in a location where the lights are turned on and off frequently.
  • Don't Don't use a CFL in closets, for instance, which are less than ideal for CFL applications since the light is turned on/off frequently.
  • Don't use standard CFLs on dimmers. It will significantly shorten the life of the bulb.
  • Don't use regular CFLs in high temperature environments.
  • Don't use regular CFLs with motion detectors.
  • Don't use a CFL on electronic timers, which will reduce the lifespan of the bulb.
